So I pull into the driveway of the civic center, hazardous materials loaded in my car. Fifteen years of paint cans plus one old stereo receiver.
I follow instructions and get on one of the two lines. As we drive through the orange cones there are people along the way who stop us to ask questions about what we're carrying. Each individual unloads their specialty. I don't even have to get out of my car.
Auto tires. Pesticides & fertilizers. Antifreeze. Motor oil and filters. Household cleaners. Solvents. Car batteries. Pool chemicals. Paint products. Telephones. Fax machines. Computers. Televisions. Printers and scanners. VCRs. Gasoline and fuel.
Loads of this stuff. Piled up everywhere on either side. Massive amounts.
My eyes welled up with tears. The horror of it all.
What were we doing to our planet? What could one person do about it?
Eventually I approached the last station and came to someone who began unloading my own hazmat waste from my trunk.
Not only am I not part of the solution, *I* was contributing to this problem.
